James Hernandez is driven to do his absolute best and knows what it means to get the work done right. He started his journey working at UT in 2019 as a student worker while studying neuroscience. He worked first at the front desk in the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center, and later for Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) to support events. After graduating in the fall of 2022, James became a full-time cashier in PTS. He recently started a new role on the PTS events team, which includes five staff members who approve more than 300 parking requests per month for event and construction activities. As the University grows, this team remains dedicated to meeting all parking needs for the departments, student organizations, contractors, and vendors that contribute to the dynamic and lively experience on the Forty Acres.
1. What does it look like to Get Things Done Right?
My job, and much of the work that happens at PTS, involves thoroughness and coordination to process requests competently. One recent project involved a request to block certain spaces to facilitate a statue delivery for the School of Law. I coordinated with our enforcement team to reserve and block those parking spaces and our sign team to communicate the temporary change. Everyone on our team is responsible for making informed decisions and accurately handling requests. If spaces need to be reserved, we double-check to ensure we’re reserving the right ones, and if needed, that we’re communicating with permit holders in a timely manner. We’re all responsible for ensuring our teams are on the same page about what we’re approving and the work we’re doing.
2. What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy the opportunity to connect with the entire campus community. Whether I’m at my desk processing parking permits and sending emails, or out in the field directing traffic, there is plenty of opportunity to interact with everyone across UT!
3. What do you think you bring to the work atmosphere?
I bring a servant attitude to the work atmosphere, where I am dedicated to supporting my team in any way possible and providing excellent customer service to the University’s parking patrons.
I’m motivated by knowing that the output of my work positively impacts others in the workplace. I enjoy seeing my teammates succeed, and if my efforts can support them in any way, it drives me to give my absolute best.
4. What is something you’re most proud of in your work at UT?
In my previous role as a cashier, I had the opportunity to train four new employees, all of whom are now excelling in their roles! One recently received a customer compliment for being “extremely helpful” while assisting a director with renewing their parking permit. It’s rewarding to see the people I once trained now making a positive impact on others.
5. What is one of your favorite places on campus and why?
My favorite place on campus is Speedway! It's a nostalgic spot for me. Walking down it and seeing all the students and organizations reminds me of how, less than five years ago, I began my journey at UT as a student.
