To keep everyone moving safely through campus, the University is implementing mobility changes that will take effect Aug. 24. These updates are intended to improve safety and create a more welcoming campus experience in the busiest areas of campus.
New Pedestrian Friendly Zone
UT has designated a new Pedestrian Friendly Zone on main campus that includes Speedway and the area inside San Jacinto Boulevard to Guadalupe Street and 21st Street up to 24th Street as indicated on the map here. The roadways of San Jacinto Boulevard, Guadalupe Street, and 21st Street will continue to allow all forms of traffic. The perimeter will be clearly marked with signage to help our community adjust to the changes.
Within the Pedestrian Friendly Zone, users of personal electric vehicles (PEVs) will be required to dismount and walk their wheels — not ride — through this high-traffic pedestrian area.
PEVs are compact, battery-powered transportation devices intended for a single rider, such as electric scooters, electric bicycles, electric boards (e.g., skateboards, hoverboards, Onewheels), and Segways. ADA mobility devices, such as electric wheelchairs and manually powered mobility aids, may be ridden in the area and are not considered PEVs.
Users of traditional bicycles and other self-powered wheeled devices may ride but are encouraged to go slowly in the zone, be mindful of pedestrians, and always obey the rules of the road. Upon entering the zone, Lime and Bird electric scooters will power off, bringing the motor to a safe, gradual stop allowing you to walk it.
To support safer movement through campus, the University is also adding designated bicycle and scooter parking spaces and corrals throughout the campus core.
Education and Awareness About Mobility Safety
The University is focused on education and awareness as the campus community adjusts to the new mobility expectations. Beginning Aug. 24 and throughout the fall, you'll see signage, reminders, and outreach encouraging Longhorns to walk — not ride — through the heart of campus and help create a safer environment for all.
Please familiarize yourself with the Pedestrian Friendly Zone map and allow yourself enough time to get to your destination safely and responsibly.

UT offers a variety of free transportation options to help students, faculty, staff, and visitors travel around campus, including UT Shuttle service with a UT photo ID, PTS Connect shuttle service, PTS Pickup daytime courtesy cart service, Sure Walk late-night rides and walking service, UT Night Rides late-night Lyft rides, and CapMetro's Courtesy Stop Program for safer evening shuttle drop-offs. Whether you're heading across campus during the day or traveling after dark, these services are available to help you get where you need to go safely.
